110 ton transformer heavy transport and skidding
The route from Italy to Albania and the positioning of a 110 ton transformer
Marraffa took care of the exceptional transport of a 110 ton transformer from Brescia to Vlorë, in Albania.
The load was transported from the production factory to the port of Marghera, where it arrived in Durrës via the port of Bari. Once landed in Albanian territory, the transformer was transported to a power plant near Vlorë. Here the transformer was positioned on the foundation by the same Marraffa operators with the skidding technique.
The operation was successfully completed thanks to the preparation of the Marraffa operators and the meticulous design work by the technical office. In particular, the transport was preceded by a feasibility analysis, where our technical office verified that the geometry of the convoy was suitable for the route. Subsequently, our permit office requested authorizations from the entities involved.
Exceptional handling: what is the skidding technique?
With the skidding technique, the load is positioned on special tracks and, thanks to the use of hydraulic jacks, it is dragged to be installed in the definitive housing.
It is a particularly demanding exceptional handling and transport technique, but at the same time very suggestive to observe, used since the times of the ancient Egyptians who used it to move the large boulders useful for the construction of the pyramids.
