Exceptional transport of a 140 ton transformer
Transport with Girder Bridge System on the Italian roads
8.5 m long by almost 4 m wide, with a weight of 140 tons. These are the numbers of a transformer transported by Marraffa from the province of Caserta to the province of Rome.
The transformer was handled with Girder Bridge System on a convoy with an overall length of over 50 m and a width of 5 m, pulled by two trucks, one at the front and one at the rear.
The convoy had a modular configuration with 20 axles and covered a distance of 291 km. The operation, carried out in three nights, was successfully completed thanks to the preparation of the Marraffa operators and the meticulous design work by the technical office. In particular, the transport was preceded by a feasibility analysis, where our technical office verified that the geometry of the convoy was suitable for the route.
Subsequently, our permit office requested authorizations from the bodies involved (Autostrade per l'Italia, the Province of Rome and Anas). Dozens of second-level appraisals were requested from the latter, i.e. even more precise studies, on bridges, viaducts and overpasses present in its area of competence.
On the motorway section, on the other hand, the convoy traveled the entire way accompanied by the technical assistance of Autostrade per l'Italia, which allowed the use of a space in the service areas identified by us to allow the vehicle to park.
Finally, Police made themselves available to sign an ordinance for a parking ban in their municipality to allow the convoy to pass easily.
